An Effective All Natural Homemade Jewelry Cleaner

This homemade jewelry cleaner is simple and effective. Commercial cleaners are expensive and full of chemicals, DIY jewelry cleaner is not.

Though I love to browse Etsy and Pinterest and admire all the artsy jewelry, I don’t consider myself a big jewelry person.

Wearing Jewelry All the Time

I rarely wear anything more than my wedding rings, a pair of stud earrings, and a simple necklace. I also sleep and shower in all of my jewelry. That may surprise you, but if you lost things as often as me you’d understand. I’ve lost too many of my little treasures over the years, and do not want my wedding rings to be added to that list.

Cleaning My Jewelry Often

The problem I have with wearing all of the same jewelry all the time is that it doesn’t take long for my pieces to lose their sparkle.

The rings have it the worst. I garden, make biscuits, clean out the chicken coop, change diapers, and do all sorts of other stuff with my hands. My rings catch a lot of grime from all of that activity, so they require regular cleaning.

Since commercial cleaners can be expensive and are full of strong chemicals, I prefer to work with a natural, homemade DIY jewelry cleaner. I’ve been using different methods for several years now, and this is what I’ve found to be most effective.

Homemade Jewelry Cleaner Recipe

This homemade jewelry cleaner is simple and effective. Commercial cleaners are expensive and full of chemicals, DIY jewelry cleaner is not.

Ingredients

• ½ cup witch hazel (or white vinegar)
• 3 drops tea tree essential oil
• 1 ounce baking soda
• an old toothbrush

US Customary – Metric

Instructions

Swirl, Soak, Scrub

• Put the jewelry in a glass mason jar.
• Cover with a ½ cup of vinegar or witch hazel. Add 3 drops of tea tree oil and swirl to mix.
• Allow jewelry to soak in the mixture overnight.
• The next morning, coat with baking soda and scrub with an old toothbrush, then rinse with water.

Results of This Homemade Jewelry Cleaner

The first evidence you’re going to have that this homemade DIY jewelry cleaner worked will be all the stuff floating around in your vinegar/tea tree oil liquid. The last time I put my jewelry in this mixture I didn’t think it was too dirty, and it didn’t exactly need cleaning. Within just a few minutes, though, there was so much stuff floating around in the water that I was appalled.

Your jewelry will be noticeably cleaner after just the soak. It will even be disinfected, too. Adding the baking soda scrub at the end will ensure that you get everything clean, especially in all the little crevices. If your kitchen faucet has a high-pressure setting, that will be the best thing to use for rinsing your jewelry. Just make sure you hold on tight, because searching for lost objects in the sink trap or garbage disposal is one of the least pleasant tasks in the world. Take my word for it. Consider using a strainer.

Personally, I love the feeling of wearing newly-cleaned, sparkly jewelry. If you find that you keep gazing at your rings and getting kind of lost in the sparkle, you’ll know that you’ve done a good job of cleaning them. And you’ll enjoy that look until the next time you make biscuits, put on lotion, or make your kids play-dough.

Good thing this homemade jewelry cleaner is such a simple recipe, you’ll probably be using it often!

Explanation of Ingredients

I’ve used both witch hazel and vinegar for cleaning my jewelry.

Witch hazel is slightly acidic, and vinegar is much more so, but either will work for soaking your jewelry. This cleaning method is intended for jewelry with sturdy stone settings (I wouldn’t use it for opals, pearls, or tanzanite, for example), and that is especially important to keep in mind if you’re using vinegar. Witch hazel is certainly the milder of the two, so use whichever ingredient you feel comfortable with.

Tea tree oil is a known disinfectant and anti-fungal. It isn’t completely necessary to add to your jewelry cleaner, but as I said above, my jewelry can get pretty gross. A small drop of tea tree oil adds a real antiseptic boost to this homemade jewelry cleaner, so I’m happy to add it. Like I said – I’ve cleaned the chicken coop wearing my wedding rings. I’ll take all of the natural antiseptic power I can get. (For more information and other uses for tea tree oil, read this.)

Baking soda is a slightly abrasive, inexpensive scrubbing tool. Unlike the ingredients listed above, it’s basic rather than acidic. Baking soda is especially good for tarnished silver, but should never be used on aluminum. I find it works wonders on my diamond rings.

DIY Holiday Spray Recipe for Moldy & Musty Smells

Have that musty, mildew smell on your Christmas tree or other Christmas decorations? Use this DIY deodorizing spray to get rid of them!

My family starts decorating for the holidays right after Thanksgiving. Once the turkey is devoured, it’s time for the tree!

Mildew Smell on Holiday Decorations

Each year, I carefully unpack and clean our ornaments, wreaths, and garlands. This year, I noticed that my holiday decor was smelling a little musty.

I hate waste, so I wasn’t about to throw it away and buy new decorations. That meant I had one choice: find a way to refresh it. I began looking in the supermarket to find a product that would disinfect, clean, and refresh my decorations. Since I was also looking for something to make my decorations smell fresh, I really didn’t want to choose anything artificial smelling. I had no luck in finding anything without fragrance or harsh ingredients.

Instead, I decided that I would make my own DIY holiday cleaner.

DIY Spray for that Musty Mildew Smell

Note: Bonus! You can use this spray to freshen up more than holiday decorations.

White Vinegar

My first goal was to find ingredients that would do the job. I chose a base of white vinegar because it is a great natural cleaner. Next, I decided to add essential oils.

Cinnamon Leaf Essential Oil

The first oil I chose is cinnamon leaf essential oil. Who doesn’t think of the holidays when they smell cinnamon? This oil is also antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal. Its spicy and invigorating scent tends to take over, so it’s best to just use a little of this oil.

Clove Essential Oil

Another wonderful holiday scent is clove oil. This essential oil is deeply grounding and gives this cleaner such a balanced aroma. Not to mention clove essential oil is antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-fungal.

Juniper Berry Essential Oil

Next, I chose juniper berry essential oil. It’s one of my favorite oils to use on garlands because it smells like a pine tree. There are subtle sweet notes to this oil that blend very well with cinnamon. Juniper berry essential oil is also antimicrobial and anti-fungal so it kills that musty smell.

Siberian Fir Essential Oil

Lastly, I chose Siberian fir essential oil, one of the best oils for deodorizing mildew smells. It also smells pine-like but helps to eliminate odors and replace them with a fresh, clean scent. Siberian fir essential oil is also an airborne antimicrobial, which makes it perfect for spraying on dusty decorations.

I find the combination of these oils to be light, refreshing, and wonderfully spicy/resonating. They work so well together and I feel glad knowing that my decorations are clean once again!

Please note: Take care when using cinnamon and clove essential oils. They can be quite irritating to the eyes, nose, and skin. They should be also avoided if pregnant, breastfeeding, or around small children. Also, many essential oils are unsafe around pets, so take care to keep this cleaner in a safe area.

Musty Mildew Smell Remover Spray

Ingredients

• 8 ounces distilled water
• 8 ounces white vinegar
• 30 drops cinnamon leaf essential oil (find pure cinnamon leaf EO here)
• 10 drops clove essential oil (find pure clove EO here)
• 20 drops juniper berry essential oil (find pure juniper berry EO here)
• 20 drops Siberian fir essential oil (find pure Siberian fir EO here)

Instructions

1. Combine water and vinegar in a 16-ounce spray bottle. (Find dark glass spray bottles here.)
2. Add in essential oils.
3. Shake well.
4. Spray lightly and evenly on decorations or in the air.

More Ways to Use Your Holiday Refresher Spray

Lately, I’ve been using this spray around the house as a multipurpose cleaner and room deodorizer. I find it works really well as a room refreshing spray and I often spray it lightly in my living room before our company arrives. It also helps to mask musty smells and unpleasant odors, so I use it frequently in the bathroom and kitchen/trash can.

If you don’t have one (or more) of these oils, I would encourage you to experiment with any of the following: Nutmeg, Cardamom, Clove, Cinnamon, Pine, Siberian Fir, Cedarwood, Juniper Berry, Ginger, or Sweet Orange. Any combination of these oils is likely to lead to a fabulous holiday scent.
