• “Trump’s Hatred For Renewables Means The US Is Falling Behind The Rest Of The World” • Donald Trump is the planet’s foremost advocate of fossil fuels, throwing the might of the US presidency into a battle to keep the world mired in the combustion era. • “Why Fossil Fuels Are Having Such A Hard Time Competing With Renewables” • As we use the easiest fossil fuels to acquire, the cost of getting them goes up. • “China Eyes 3.6 TW Of Wind And Solar Power By 2035” • China is aiming to increase its installed wind and solar power capacity to 3,600 GW by 2035, over six times the 2020 levels. This was amongst the new Nationally Determined Contributions Beijing’s President Xi Jinping announced during his speech at the UN Climate Summit. [MSN]
• “Over 90% Of Global Electricity To Be Powered By Renewables By 2050” • Renewables are projected to provide 91% of global electricity by 2050, with solar PVs and wind energy leading the forecast. The International Renewable Energy Agency says this makes large renewables projects and connecting large consumer loads priorities for the energy transition. [Asian Power]

Why we need this call-to-action

This summer, the state published a draft of its comprehensive energy plan, which is open for comment until October 6th. The Governor’s plan is woefully inadequate. The draft state energy plan abandons CLCPA targets, keeps the state on fossil fuels indefinitely, and treats the New York Power Authority’s ability to build public renewables as an afterthought, when it should be the main driver of the state’s energy future.

Third Act Upstate New York is joining with Public Power NY to call for New York’s energy plan to be based on public renewables, not pipelines. Send a comment today and share with your friends, family, and coworkers!

While the President of the United States talked about the “climate hoax”, leaders within the United Nations called for massively fast-tracking climate action on all fronts if we are to avert critical tipping points in the climate system. Yet, now, when New York most needs determined leadership on climate and energy policy, the draft 2025 State Energy Plan is a testament to the state’s failure to meet the moment. • “‘What’s Stopping Us?’ Putin Threatens To Attack Ukraine’s Nuclear Power Plants” • Russian President Vladimir Putin has threatened to strike Ukrainian nuclear power plants, framing the move as a “mirror response.” He claimed that Ukraine has made attacks near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Russian occupied in March 2022. • “Indian Point Nuclear Plant Can Dump 45,000 Gallons Of Radioactive Water Into The Hudson River” • Roughly 45,000 gallons of radioactive water will be discharged into the Hudson River after a federal court ruling struck down an environmental law. • “Pope Leo Spoke On Climate Change” • On October 1, Pope Leo made a passionate address to an audience at Castel Gandolfo urging everyone to not allow climate change to be divisive, but an issue that unites all humanity. • “Massive Fire Erupts At A Chevron Refinery In Southern California” • Firefighters were battling a blaze at a Chevron refinery in Southern California late on Thursday, officials said, after a massive fireball erupted at the facility. HAPPY ENERGY EFFICIENCY DAY (October 1, 2025)

Happy Energy Efficiency Day! It’s a perfect time to spread the word about the benefits of efficiency, including that it saves money, cuts pollution, and creates good jobs.

Some Good and Bad Efficiency News in the Northeast

• Bad News: Vermont Governor Phil Scott issued an executive order declaring that builders can construct homes to a 2020 energy code, rather than to the current 2024 code. The newer code—developed by the state’s Department of Public Service and approved by a legislative committee—saves homeowners money each year, delivering energy bill reductions that exceed incremental mortgage costs. A recent multi-stakeholder plan seeks to help the state improve code compliance.

• Good News: Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey recently announced a plan to speed up housing construction by streamlining the environmental review for qualifying projects. To qualify, housing development projects must meet several criteria, including meeting density requirements and energy efficiency standards set out in the state’s stretch code. The proposal is open for public comment.

• Good News: New York utilities recently set new weatherization requirements for their maximum incentive heat pump programs. Starting in March 2026, homes that have successfully participated in a weatherization program or received a qualifying assessment will be eligible for significantly higher incentives to install a heat pump. The change will help ensure that homes are ready for heat pumps before installation and help manage future costs to the electric grid.
