This homemade onion soup mix recipe is simple to make. It can be stored in bulk and used in anything from meatloaf to chip dip to onion soup!
One of the staples I keep in my kitchen is a dry onion soup mix. You can make french onion dip, pot roast, wings, even, yes, onion soup. I’ve been buying small packets for a long time, but I had no idea it was so easy to make! And, even better than those small packets, I can make it in bulk!
Make a Quart or Scale it Down
I’m a busy person. I have a full-time job, a few part-time jobs, and a small business. So anything that can be made ahead is a great time saver. I grow a lot of my own herbs and dehydrate them ahead of time so I can put them together when I need more mix. I can even customize it so it has just a little, or no salt at all.

Using Your Onion Soup Mix
The easiest way to use this mix is to think of what you would normally use those packets for. A ¼ cup measuring cup equals about a packet.
Onion Soup
Add ½ cup of this onion soup mix recipe to 2 cups of water. Simmer and serve! You can add rice or noodles for some extra calories. You can also melt Swiss cheese over it to make French onion soup!
Meatloaf
Mix ¼ cup of the onion soup mix into your favorite meatloaf recipe. Bake and watch everyone smile!
French Onion Dip
Add ¼ cup onion soup mix to 2 cups of sour cream. Mix and enjoy! You can dip chips or, for a healthier option, dip your veggies.
Pork chops
Grind ¼ cup onion soup mix to a powder. Dredge pork chops in the soup mix and bake. Homemade shake-n-bake!
Chicken Marinade
Add ¼ cup onion soup mix to ¼ cup olive oil and ¾ cup vinegar. I use apple cider vinegar for added flavor. Mix well and place in a glass bowl. Add your chicken and turn to coat. Cover and leave in the refrigerator for 3-4 hours. Turn once in a while. Grill or bake as you normally would.
Creamy Onion Soup
Add ½ cup of half-and-half to the soup recipe above. If you like the soup thicker, use 1½ cups of water instead of two. Makes a great thermos meal on a cold day.
Pot Roast
Sear a medium pot roast on all sides. I use a cast iron or ceramic coated pan. Add a cup of water and ¼ cup onion soup mix. Braise covered for an hour or so. The liquid should be about halfway up the side of the roast. Turn the roast after half an hour. At this point you can add carrots and potatoes and whatever else you like for veggies. I like parsnips and rutabaga with mine. You can leave it on the stove or put it in the oven. Just be sure to keep the liquid lever consistent. You may need to add more water.
Onion Soup Mix Recipe Tips
I use powdered salt so that it coats the onion particles, rather than settling at the bottom. I would still shake the soup mix before each use because of settling. You can powder your own salt by running it through a spice mill or coffee grinder.
You can also make this homemade onion soup mix without salt, less salt, or with a salt substitute.
I’m going to make this dry onion soup mix recipe right now. How about you?
